ive been meaning to ask this question for a long time?
i was watching a discovery channel show about how they extracted brain cells from a rat and it learned how to fly a plane but my question is. if they didnt have all the cells (which they didnt they said they only had some) then wouldnt the rat in the real body still have control or would they have to get ALL of the brain cells
That was a pretty amazing article. It’s been sometime ago, so I don’t recall all of the details but, as I understand it, they extracted nerve cells from the motor cortex of a rat embryo. The embryo probably died. Ok, these early neurons were not yet matured and differentiated into functional units within a real rat’s brain. Thus, they could be made to mature on a grid of mechanical electrodes that acted as “inputs” and “outputs” to these nerve cells. As I recall, the amount of neurons used was around 25,000 which isn’t a whole lot of cells, but enough. Brain cells are able to process information differently than computer logic, and that’s what the scientists were attempting to capture here with the flight simulator. As I understand it, they could output data about the aircraft from the computer to the “inputs” of the nerve cells where the data would get manipulated and processed biologically before it was then “output’ed” to the actual flight simulator.
I believe that what they were trying to capture in this study was something related to “intuition” or “gut feel”, something that no computer can yet achieve on its own.
